Oats

Canadian agribusiness Richardson International announced last week, that it is to increase capacity at its Bedford facility by 35% over the next four years. Demand for oats continues to grow for this incredibly nutritious food, packed with important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Oats are also associated with lower blood cholesterol when consumed regularly. Bedford is perfectly located in heart of the country’s key growing region. As the area of Oats is clearly expected to grow, AHDB currently have a project on-going, due to finish in May 2022, to look at Nitrogen and Sulphur management for yield and quality in winter and spring oats. AHDB decided that in the last major revision of RB209 Nutrient Management Guide, that the recommendations for oats was not robust enough due to insufficient data. It was also assumed that oats have a similar requirement for sulphur to that of other cereals, so it was concluded that more research in this area was needed. The research will provide a better understanding of how N rates, timings and S rates should be managed to meet grain specifications for milling oats. A link to the AHDB project page is below which also contains a link to a video with details of where to look for more information:-
